Katie visiting with friends

Katie visiting with friends

I wouldn’t have thought it was possible to be so-called “retired” and stay so darn busy! I have no idea where my time is going these days.

As some of you may know, I am about to undertake my first vacation in about 12 years and actually leave… Continue reading

Staircase to the Portico

I can’t believe that not only is it time for a new communiqué, but that it’s as late as it is – I don’t know what happens to my time. I can’t imagine that, once upon a time, I spent 12 hours a day at Grapevine, and still had time for things like goat walks and newsletters! I guess it’s the old truth of “jobs expand into the time available”… Continue reading

I Took a Flashlight, and Became the Belle of the Ball

As I said in my blog comment, I have now lots of time to invent new ways of doing things, and, accordingly, we decided to gather the cattle in the North Cochise, drive them to the corral, sort off the heifers which are going to be put into the Grapevine Headquarters – so much grass there, never fully utilized before because of the cross ranch traffic – and then drive… Continue reading

SHADES OF MY BLUE HEIFER…

Having a herd of cows can cause you some worries, like when it doesn’t rain, or when they climb through the fences and take up camping six miles away on the local golf course, or at any one of a million other times – but sometimes they sure give you a good laugh!

Our first time heifers have begun to calve… Continue reading

Games Animals Play

I think I mentioned before that I have now inherited the bookkeeper’s job at Grapevine, as well as doing the books for the cattle ranch, and that sure keeps me busy! I had forgotten just how much fiddling around there is to bookkeeping, and more so since Quick Books had deemed it necessary to make their program more efficient by making it more complicated! At the cattle ranch I have… Continue reading

Ah, those Indian Cows!

You are likely quite sick of hearing about our green grass, but as a final comment on it, let me just say that we had the summer round up a whole month later than we should have had it because of the muddy corrals, and, because of the delay and the rains, the late calves we branded were probably 100 lbs heavier than we had expected. Not a bad problem to have, of course, except that the little bulls were far too developed to be castrated, and so will have to be sold, when the brands dry up, in October, as bulls instead of steers – so generating a lower price. There is always a drawback, it seems! But even as I sit here writing this, the ones we sent off this week are probably being loaded onto the buyers’ trucks in Willcox, and on Tuesday we will get the check and see just exactly what they brought. Golfing Bulls, Appaloosas & Garden Snakes

I know I talked about the round up last time, but I thought I would share a couple of photos taken by Kristin – these gals don’t look as if they want to be friends any time soon!!

Following round up, two of our bulls decided they’d had all the fun they could stand here at the ranch, and they headed north. Somehow the fence at the northern boundary had got loosened, and they hopped through it, and made for Cochise. Luckily someone saw them, read the brand, called us, and we got them back home. It brought home the reason why it is illegal, in Arizona, to turn out cattle without a brand – it sure makes for good friends and neighbors! Continue reading

The Piñata Tree

I guess when you live in a place where time stands still – and I hear it does that, for the guests – then, by a law of nature, it has to speed up for the rest of us, right?? Because for me, it sure flies – I can hardly believe that round up is over, the calves are with their moms on the Flats east of the headquarters, and… Continue reading

Round Up!

Dear Friends,

If you think you haven’t heard from me for a long while you’re right.

Roundup at Grapevine Canyon RanchFirst of all we had our normal November round up, complicated this year by the fact that we had decided not to sell the calves in October due to the bad market prices, but took the advice of our sale Continue reading
