Hey guys, sorry it has taken me so long to get this message sent. As expected since my supervising MD is taking a 6 month leave-of-absence my return to work has been more than busy. Only because I now how downloading my wonderful pictures of my great week at GCR as my screensaver will I be able to survive the rest of the year. Everyone at your ranch is wonderful, and made me feel just like one of the family. As far as my foot that Waylon rolled on the last day, it is still pretty sore and swollen, but will get better with time. Hope poor Waylon is doing ok. Tell Nancy thank you for my magnet and also the prickly pear syrup made it back perfect, plan on making my first margarita tonight. Also tell Eve, I have read about 100 pages of her mother's book, really enjoying it, just wish I had more time to read. I think I have my husband wanting to come next year during the round up time. Again, I cannot express what I wonderful time I had--just what the doctor ordered (expecially now that I am covering for my absent physcian)
Hope to see you soon.

I have just finished my forth trip to Grapevine. This time instead of doing the trail and day rides I decided to try cow camp along with three other intreped guests, Lynn and Erine from the UK both are seasoned veterans at Cow Camp and Rdound Up,the third member was Richard from Flordia and as our teacher/mentor we have Butch this man has thye patience of a saint. Day 1 he taught us the art of roping first with traffice cones which I did master (they dont move) then we came to trying this on horse back this is a lot more difficult (you need three arms, one to hold your reins one for holding the coil and a third one for throwing the loop).Well after many unsuccessful tries Butch decided it was time for lunch. after lunch it was time to go and find the cows. After much searching we found them (not sure but I think it took us about 2 or 3 hours. Next it was time to move them to a differant pasture, this was fun I think.
With Butch giving us directions and more instructions we finally got them to the pasture. End of day one.
And time for a cold one.
Day 2 collect the horeses and ride to the pasture and move the cows to the pens at the cattle ranch. Oncde there its time for more ropingg pratice this time in the pens with 4 very young cows.
Again not a lot of success on my account, Lynn being the only one of the four to rope a cow. Butch then had us moving and seperating 1 cow from the four in the large pening area, again he is there giving everyone instruction on how to do this. I think we manged this one with out either the cows or us getiting injuried.Up next its time to move the cows back to the pasture for the nigh, once they are happy its time to unsaddle and feed the horesethen its time to feed us, This is where Jimmy the chuck wagaon expert comes in. This guy cooks a great steak and baked potatoe, his blueberry cobbler is great. After dinner and a few cup0s of coffee itsw time to get out the bed rolls and light fire andf sit aroung having a beer ande listening to Butch tell stories about the ranch and the local history.(great Story teller) Then its time for bed(hint wear plenty of warn clothing as it gets cold at night).
After a very cold night wilt little sleep(except for Lynn) move the3 cows back to the pasture for the night
Day 3 feed the horse and then its time for Jimmy to return and cook breakfast. O

You are likely quite sick of hearing about our green grass, but as a final comment on it, let me just say that we had the summer round up a whole month later than we should have had it because of the muddy corrals, and, because of the delay and the rains, the late calves we branded were probably 100 lbs heavier than we had expected. Not a bad problem to have, of course, except that the little bulls were far too developed to be castrated, and so will have to be sold, when the brands dry up, in October, as bulls instead of steers – so generating a lower price. There is always a drawback, it seems! But even as I sit here writing this, the ones we sent off this week are probably being loaded onto the buyers’ trucks in Willcox, and on Tuesday we will get the check and see just exactly what they brought. I finally gave up on my fat, lazy horse, Scotty, and sent him over to Grapevine for wrangler RJ to ride. RJ is not only a good horse hand, but he is also tall and much heavier than I am, and I thought he would be the best to work all that fat off Scotty. I don’t think Scotty appreciates the fact that this is all for the good of his heart, though – he misbehaved with RJ on the trail, and the other morning, before setting out, he put on quite an exhibition of silliness, shying and huffing and puffing at the water tank in the arena. Finally I’d had enough – “Scotty-o!” I bellowed, “QUIT! Behave yourself!” It was quite funny – he rolled an eye in my direction and immediately quieted down, and turned into a normal, civilized horse about to go on a trail ride. Continue reading
The great annual happening, the monsoons, are always eagerly anticipated here in the high desert, and the other day Danny launched once again into the annual conversation we all like to have at this time of the year, the discussion of thunder in the distance and the glimpse of faraway lightning, way down in Mexico. This conversation spans the centuries – I bet that the ancient people, who lived here all those years ago, were even more obsessed with weather than we are now – imagine that not only was there no faucet to turn on, but there was no well to get the water from, and, if it didn’t rain and fill the lakes and little water holes, you were pretty well done.
