Deluxe Chaparral Casita at Grapevine Canyon Ranch

Our Deluxe Cassita -- The Chaparral

I hope your New Year is going as well as ours! We are making progress in all areas, including a massive clean up of not only accommodations, but also of the public buildings, barn, maintenance and corral areas – what better way to start a new year!

And there have been some staff additions also. As I mentioned in a past blog, Bonnie, our awesome reservationist, the one who remembers not only your name, but also the name of your dog, your mother-in-law and probably your high school teacher if you ever mentioned it in front of her, is back to work the front office, and peace and order reign once more! And Carlos, our first Head of Maintenance, who began work here in the 90’s, is also back, and has, in a short week, worked his magic so that the mess behind the workshop, which I am sure you saw on some of the afternoon rides, is cleaned up and a thing of the past – and that’s only one of the many things that he’s achieved! So you see I am looking forward to ’10 as the year of triumphs and achievements, and I pray it may be the same for you – a new decade, a new beginning!

Along with the new beginning, we are also looking for some new staff – at the moment, two housekeepers. If you know of anyone who would enjoy living and working at the ranch, tell them to give us a call!

The next thing I want to tell you about is a great new search engine called Leapfish.com. Leapfish is a most unique search engine – it doesn’t search for words, as others do – instead, it searches all media, so that, when you search www.gcranch.com ,it comes up with not only the web page for us, but also all latest news on our blogs, twitters, twitpicks, YouTube, Facebook and any other thing you want to know about (in this case) the ranch. A great new way to surf!

One of our guests sent me a neat New Year’s resolution, as given to her by her horse, so I thought I would share it with you – and YOUR horse!

Horse Resolutions For The New Year:

  • I CAN walk and poop at the same time. I can, I can, I can
  • I will NOT stop and poop or pee every time I pass the same spot in the arena.
  • I will NOT leave when my rider falls off.
  • I will NOT roll in streams or try to roll when my human is on my back.
  • I will NOT leap over large nonexistent obstacles when the whim strikes.
  • I will NOT walk faster on the way home than I did on the way out.
  • I promise NOT to swish my tail while my human is cleaning my back feet.
  • I promise also NOT to choose that particular time to answer nature’s call.
  • I will NOT bite my farrier’s butt just because it’s there.
  • I will NOT confuse my human’s blond hair for really soft hay.
  • I will NOT wipe green slime down the back of my human’s white shirt.
  • I will NOT blow my nose on my human.
  • I will NOT try to mooch goodies off every human within a 1 mile radius.
  • I will NOT grab my lead rope in my mouth and attempt to lead myself, nor will I practice how to untie myself until I can do it.
  • I will NOT have an attitude problem. I won’t, I won’t, I won’t!
  • I will NOT pull my new shoes off the very next day just to prove that I can.
  • I accept that not every carrot is for me.
  • I will NOT shy at familiar objects just for fun.
  • I will NOT bite the butt of the horse in front of me during the trail ride just to say "Hi". * I WILL put my ears forward and cooperate when it comes to photos.

Not, of course, that any of OUR horses would do anything like that!!!

And finally, one of our guests gave me a little poem which I thought I would share with you here. It’s most apt for a new year, especially for bird lovers:

Winter Wren, King of the Birds

Winter Wren, King of the Birds

JOY, HEALTH, LOVE AND PEACE
“Joy, Health, Love and Peace be all here in this place
By your leave we will sing, concerning our King.
Our King is well dressed in skills of the best
In ribbons so rare, no King can compare,
We have travelled many miles over hedges and stiles
In search of our King unto you we bring,
We have powder and shot, to conquer the lot,
We have cannon and ball to conquer them all
Old Christmas is past, Twelfth Tide is the last
And we bid you adieu, Great Joy to the New!”

(It is not of the newborn King of Winter, the wondrous childe they sing,
but of the Wren, the King of the Birds.)

So, all best till next time!!
