Here is a portion of the excerpt on the flap: As such, it is the record of a terrible time presented, not through the abstractions of history, but through a recording of the daily experiences of people who had to live through that time. We are told of the fall of Czechoslovakia and its occupation by the Nazis. Eventually Alex was arrested. He was in deep trouble. When Zdena heard of the arrest, she summoned up the courage to personally go to the Gestapo headquarters. She was airily told by the Gestapo chief that Alex was in prison in Breslau, Germany, where he would have "his head chopped off."
